{Client Project} Splurge vs. Steal

If you’ve been following along this week then you know we’re trying to turn this:

Into this:

By doing this:

I think we can all agree that this man cave needs a serious injection of the following:

  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Leather

Since the couch is from everyone’s favorite blue warehouse, Ed is not allowed to get any additional furniture from that store. Sophisticated bachelor pad does not equal IKEA catalog. We need this space to feel luxe and expensive.

Now, if I had my way I’d only use the highest-quality ingredients in my spaces. Since this is (sadly) not an episode of Million Dollar Decorators we must be realistic. That is why I like to play Splurge vs. Steal. Let’s play it now!

First, Ed needs a new rug and he could go in one of two directions depending on his taste. Option 1 (as seen in the above models) is a “World Traveler” style approach.

SPLURGE: Persian Hand-Knotted Red & Blue Heriz Wool Rug
STEAL: Preston Red Gabbeh Rug

Or, if that’s not his vibe, he could go in a more “Casual Cool” direction.

SPLURGE: Distressed Wool Rug
STEAL: Jute Boucle Rug

Next comes storage. Rather than having several small pieces to hold a few things each, I’d really like to have one large piece to anchor the wall and tidy up the room by providing ample storage.

SPLURGE: Seguro Media Console
HAPPY MEDIUM: Saga Credenza
STEAL: Asian Media Cabinet

Now we need a dining table. In a perfect world we’d find something with a 36-inch diameter but those are hard to come by — especially when you’re picky. We can settle for something 42″ or smaller as long as it’s awesome.

SPLURGE: 1930s Caliper Cast Iron Dining Table
HAPPY MEDIUM: 20th Century Chrysanthemum Brasserie Table
STEAL: Twist Bistro Table

Next we need somewhere to sit. I’m proposing 2 upholstered chairs and 2 stools for maximum versatility.

SPLURGE: Saarinen Executive Armchair
STEAL: Forza Taupe Twill Mid-Century Accent Chair

SPLURGE: Eames Walnut Stool
STEAL: Hand-Carved Walnut Twist Stool

I think every space needs standout lighting. I’d love for Ed to have an amaze-ballz floor lamp that’s a work of art. Just like with the rugs he could go in one of two directions.

Option 1:

SPLURGE: Tolomeo Mega Floor Lamp
STEAL: Polygon Floor Lamp

Option 2:

SPLURGE: Royal Marine Tripod Floor Lamp
STEAL: Telescope Floor Lamp Base

And finally, let’s see if we can’t get our bachelor to switch his couch cover from brown to charcoal gray…

Need more visuals? Head on over to the Pinterest page I’ve created for this project. There are lots more fun things I’ve collected to give this space what it lacks. And rest assured I’ll be posting on accessories for the space later on! But not tomorrow because I don’t want you to get bored.

I love wood with patina, but always thought its too expensive to buy new. The bistro table, tripod lamp and twist stools I wouldn’t think for 1 minute about buying if I had the chance. They look waaaay more expensive than their price tag says.

Tell me what you think!
